Plot Synopsis

When San Francisco Police Department Rebecca Madsen (Sarah Jones) is assigned to a grisly homicide case, a fingerprint leads her to a shocking suspect: Jack Sylvane, a former Alcatraz inmate who died decades ago. Given her family history – both her grandfather and surrogate uncle were guards at the prison – Madsen’s interest is immediately piqued, and once the enigmatic, knows-everything-but-tells-nothing government agent Emerson Hauser (Sam Neill) tries to impede her investigation, she’s doggedly committed.
Madsen turns to Alcatraz expert and comic book enthusiast, Dr. Diego Soto (Jorge Garcia) to piece together the inexplicable sequence of events. The twosome discovers that Sylvane is not only alive, but he’s loose on the streets of San Francisco, leaving bodies in his wake. And strangely, he hasn’t aged a day since he was in Alcatraz. By delving into Alcatraz history, government cover-ups and Rebecca’s own heritage, the team will ultimately discover that Sylvane is only a small part of a much larger, more sinister present-day threat.

My Thoughts

Coming from JJ Abrams, this is one pilot that I was awaiting the most during these screenings. I was not disappointed. It is easily one of the top three pilots that I watched at the LA Screenings this year. The plot of Alcatraz is very intriguing. The characters are amazing and have great scope for development as the series goes forward. Sam Neill shines as the know-it-all government agent on a special assignment. This LOST-meets-Prison Break-meets-Fringe show might just be the next big thing on television since LOST. After watching the action-packed pilot, I can hardly wait for the following episodes. It is a pity that it is not a part of the Fall line-up of FOX and will only premiere mid-season. Highly recommended!

  1. Good to see another show in ‘Mad Men’ league in terms of the visual style, costumes, props etc – should be interesting.

When are they expected to start airing if finalized? This Fall?

  2. Alcatraz : Hope the plot is extensive enough. Look forward to it!

  3. Person of Interest:

Will watch it just for Michael Emerson.

Yet another great fit in the role of (probably) a middle manager getting things done (probably for someone higher in authority).
